If you can’t enjoy a bit of time off at Christmas, when can you?! But having said that, we know how hard it can be to switch off and really relax when you’re running your own biz.
At the end of the day you’re responsible for your biz and that comes with the feeling of wanting to have control over things 24/7, 365 days of the year. We want to remind you that it’s CHRISTMAS and it’s so important to take a bit of down time when you can! Wouldn’t it feel amazing to recharge your batteries, make space for creative thinking and generally enjoy more family time, self-care and relaxation?
We have put together our top ten tips for how to really embrace the festivities with peace of mind that your business is still active:
⚡️ Create a work schedule leading up to your last working day with your must-do tasks on before Christmas. Divide them into the days you want to do them on. That way, you know each day what you will be working on, giving you structure right up until you step away.
⚡️ Get sh*t hot with your diary keeping – personal and business bookings need to be in there so you can plan for a social life as well as be in control of your biz. Don’t try and squeeze in those last minute calls or meetings which will consume more of your time and energy.
⚡️ Communicate your Christmas working schedule to clients as early as possible – managing expectations will be key to guilt-free time off. We always recommend suggesting customers only contact you for emergencies whilst you’re off. Some clients do need to be told this!
⚡️ Plan the first week back NOW. This will mean that you feel in total control when it is time to get back to it. Knowing you have an organised diary and your priorities set out now will stop you worrying over Christmas.
⚡️ Batch-create and schedule your social media and emails (and anything else that can be automated). This means there will still be content going out to your audience. You won’t be missing out on sales or brand awareness but you WON’T need to be thinking of it whilst you’re wrapping presents or enjoying a Prosecco (or three!).
⚡️Get comfortable with saying NO! We know it can be tempting to squeeze in one last piece of work for the extra pennies or to please a client BUT this will only leave you feeling stressed and panicked about the additional pending deadline.
⚡️Take your emails off your phone. Seriously. If your business doesn’t require you to check your emails daily, and you’ve set the expectation with your clients of when they will be checked, then remove them. This will reign in that pesky temptation to check them constantly. You can pop them back on again when your Christmas break is over!
⚡️Reduce your screen time. This is super important for ensuring you truly take the time off. Otherwise you will find yourself scrolling and being hit by comparison culture and feeling like others are working (remember, they’ve probably scheduled too and are also chilling in reality!). Set yourself a limit each day which is significantly less than usual.
⚡️Budget your Christmas and New Year spend. This helps you feel in control of your finances and will mean you don’t get into a negative or guilty money mindset of feeling like you have over spent and therefore will need to work extra hard when you return. This can impact the way you see money within your business too.
⚡️ Give yourself a reward during your break. Focus at least some of the time off on self-care. This will mean you feel accomplished and motivated for 2022 and beyond.
By following these steps, you will still remain in control but give yourself all-important freedom too. And freedom is one of the BIG reasons so many biz owners give for starting their biz in the first place!
Your business is NOT going anywhere, it will still be there when you get back. It’ll still be visible through your social media, website and other marketing. And after your break, you’ll feel more ready than ever to take action and level up in the new year!
We wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
